This morning we had news from one of the five rivers in the SAMARCH project, the Bresle in Normandy, that one of the 5 tagged sea trout kelts we implanted with acoustic and data storage tags (DST) last winter as part of a trial for the technique has returned to the river and was captured by Quentin JOSSET and his team in the fish trap on the lower Bresle.
Agrocampus students visit UK partners for filming project videos
Students from project partner Agrocampus Ouest in Rennes, France have spent the last few weeks creating a series of videos that explains what the SAMARCH project aims to do. A huge thank you to the students who put a lot of work into creating these videos including trips to the UK to interview key project staff.
Salmon return to River Frome from feeding in North Atlantic
As part of the SAMARCH project we are estimating the marine survival rate of the salmon populations in the Channel’s five salmon index rivers, the Frome and Tamar in the UK and Scorff, Bresle and Oir in France.
Teaming up to catch trout off the Cornish coast
On the evening of Tuesday 29 May, SAMARCH project partner staff from the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, Exeter University and the Environment Agency worked in collaboration with the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) on board the Tiger Lily to catch sea trout off the coast of Cornwall.
Salmon under the microscope
A key part of the SAMARCH Work Package T3 which focusses on improving the models used in England and France to manage salmon stocks, is to provide new information on the growth rates of salmon and also how this changes over time.

Acoustic tagging sea trout and salmon smolts for SAMARCH
A key part of the SAMARCH project is to gather information on the timing, movements and survival rates of salmon and sea trout smolts through the Frome and Tamar estuaries in the south of England and Bresle and Scorff estuaries in northern France.
